- ABSTRACT -
A journey in the Dark and Unexpected Side of Scientific Publishing
Thee world of scientific production is evolving everyday with many new stakeholders in the landscape: sites posting unpublished articles but submitted to journals (preprint websites like BioRxiv), sites for the assessment of referrees ("Publons") and new players in the field, sites for assessing accepted and published publications ("PostPublicationReview" such as PubPeer, ForBetterScience, etc.).
New (bad) practices in scientific publishing are emerging and impacting the scientific production: systematic plagiarism, multiple submissions to different journals of the same manuscript, pre-built manuscript (so-called «paper mills»), forcing authors to include in the bibliography list of references strongly suggested by referrees or editors in charge of paper handling.
Some papers are copied-paraphrased-pasted or computer-generated content (Scigen, Mathgen, ChatGPT). Authors/clients add their names on papers ready to be sent, with invented co-authors, and submit «their» manuscript to well-established journals. Cartels of researchers have been highlighted, citing each other in bibliographies full of references unrelated to the themes of published papers. Quotations can also be purchased from companies that coordinate cartel quotations.
The ultimate goal is to be nominated in the world list of 8000 "Highly Cited Researchers" published each year. This year 2024, 1,000 names of researchers were removed from the list of winners 2023 because suspected of scientific fraud.
The presentation will overview the global state of scientific publishing. A large part of the presentation will be devoted to «PostPublicationReview» (PPR) and their influence on the assessment of scientific journals. Examples of PPRs will also be presented, as well as paper mills, citation cartels and how to detect them.
Philippe Garrigues, Emeritus Research Director at the CNRS has been working in the world of scientific publishing for more than 20 years. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Environmental Science and Pollution Research" (SPRINGER-NATURE) which publishes about 6000 scientific articles per year. He is assisted by a committee of more than 50 associate editors, one managing editor, 2 editorial assistants, and a team of several staff in-house SPRINGER-NATURE.
