- ABSTRACT -
"Chemometrics: a pivotal tool in the exploration of data derived from spectroscopic imaging"
The spectroscopic techniques have never generated such a vast amount of data from the exploration of our samples. It only takes a look back two decades for each of us to realize the rapid acceleration of this evolution. Spectroscopic imaging is at the forefront of this transformative progress. Certainly, we did not wait to amass such volumes of data to cultivate chemometric approaches within this context. From the outset, they manifested as the sole means to comprehensively extract all the subtle nuances embedded in the acquired dataset and, more importantly, to generate from it the least biased insight into the analytical reality of the investigated sample. The aim of this presentation will be to introduce some chemometric concepts within the context of imaging, and also to observe their integration into comprehensive data processing methodologies that can overcome several constraints. As examples, we will first delve into a procedure designed not only to diagnose but also to correct the spectral interferences so crucial in spectroscopic imaging. We will next examine the challenges of clustering to identify all compounds present in a sample, whether major or minor. We will also delve into the quest for anecdotal spectra within large datasets—spectra so scarce in number that conventional chemometric techniques fail to detect them. Finally, as astonishing as it may sound, we will demonstrate that social media, such as Facebook, can assist us in exploring a spectroscopic imaging dataset containing over 10 million spectra acquired in just a few hours from a single sample.
