Light can be considered an energy source which is capable of remotely switching nanoscopic devices and effecting structural and chemical transformations of molecules and materials. Our research in the domain of molecular devices concerns the development of photochromic switches [1,2] as well as molecular logic gates.[3] These miniature molecular devices process ionic and photonic inputs, giving rise to easily detected photonic outputs. Energy management, storage and redistribution are important considerations in natural and artificial molecular architectures and light harvesting devices which can be controlled with high precision. Reversible energy transfer processes [4] are being harnessed in a range of bi- and multichromophoric systems in this regard with a view to incorporation in supramolecular devices. Photochemical changes are equally being used to modulate different properties such as host-guest interactions [5] or electronic properties.[6]

Delayed luminescence via reversible energy transfer to/from molecular energy reservoirs.[4]

Our expertise in switchable molecules has lead to photo-, acido- and iono-sensitive compounds which respond by changes in absorption or non-linear optical effects.
